A new found love for Pre-Vis!

At the start of this unit, I was adamant that there was no way I would ever enjoy concepting an idea, but how very wrong I was!

I'd spent many times watching our tutor show his workflow but for some reason, had never tried to do it myself. I was so stuck in the mindset that concept art had to be hand-painted and never once had I considered playing to my strengths and using 3D.

Anyone out there who does 3D will know exactly what I mean when I say, this method felt dirty. Everything that we had learnt in the creation of game ready assets didn't matter. This was all about getting the right angle to essentially, 'fake it'. Using photographs of real world objects, I was able to use a combination of well placed UVs and the occasional use of the extrude tool to give the illusion of a fully modelled asset.

The real MVP for me was Arnold. I've always used the Unreal Engine to set up large scenes in the past and have never really tried rendering software other than Blender or Substance Painter. I have no idea why I completely overlooked using the renderer that has been in the program I have used more than anything since starting my course. But it's better late than never! I am blown away but how much you can achieve with basic lighting. This is a total game changer for me because it's removed the middle man. I don't need to export everything before I can test how it looks when rendered. I can press a button and within a minute I have what I would consider a pretty decent render. My mind is still blown.

The images below are a current WIP and I wouldn't say 100% finished. However, if I'm completely honest, I'm not sure I would ever be able to not keep adding stuff so, as I'm very conscious of my time constraints, I'm forcing myself to walk away.

As I'm sure you can tell, there isn't technically anything Cassette Futuristic about the scene. This is intentional as we all wanted to make sure we had a grasp on the era before we started tweaking it. Does it feel 80s enough? What else do you think I should add to give it that pop?
